Milling Selected for CCAA Female Coaching Program
- Submitted by

Windsor, ON- St. Clair College and the Department of Athletics and Recreation is proud to announce that it will be taking part in the CCAA Female Apprentice Coach Program (FACP) for the upcoming season.

Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Jimmy El-Turk will be mentoring apprentice coach Julie Ann Milling throughout the 2020-21 season. Julie Ann is a former member of the volleyball program who graduated this past season after playing four successful seasons as a Saint including winning two OCAA Bronze Medals.  Julie Ann is a graduate of the Fitness & Health Promotion and Event Management Programs at St. Clair

Julie Ann is excited to begin her coaching career as a part of this program. “The St. Clair College women’s volleyball program has given me the experience to develop into an athlete and more so I have gained invaluable experiences I carry into my everyday life. I am now excited to give back to the program through the CCAA Female Apprentice Coach Program. After being a part of the St. Clair program for 4 years I witnessed the work it takes for athletes and coaches to create a positive culture on and off the court. With the support of the coaches, athletes and staff at St. Clair I am eager to take on this coaching role, to learn through this experience and the opportunity to work with female student-athletes at the collegiate level.”

Coach El-Turk is looking forward to being involved with the FACP for the second time. “I feel very privileged to be selected as a mentor with the CCAA Female Apprentice Coach program and very much looking forward to having Julie Ann transition from player and captain to coach and mentor for our team. Jules has shown tremendous growth in her leadership over the past four seasons and I believe she is ready to dive right into coaching. She has always been an extension of our coaching staff both in the dressing room and on the court, always willing to help her teammates develop their skills in training and mentor our younger athletes. This is a natural fit for Jules and I am excited to be a part of her coaching journey.”

Taylor Fitzgerald took part in the FACP during the 2018-19 season and is currently a member of the Saints coaching staff.

Twenty apprentices in four different sports across all five CCAA member conferences will be mentored by coaches across the country during the 2020-21 season. They will be monitored throughout the year via progress reports. The women’s volleyball program will receive additional financial assistance through the program to aid in Julie Ann’s development and progress.

“The CCAA is excited to support another group of talented young female apprentices in their journey to becoming coaches and the next generation of female coaches paving the way for other young apprentices to follow,” said Brittany Tierney, CCAA VP Sport Development.

In the program’s 15-year history, 233 female apprentices have been supported. This year’s 20 apprentices are the second highest total ever. The opportunity to recognize so many female apprentice coaches speaks to the growing efficacy of the CCAA program, according to Tierney.

“More young females within the CCAA community are seeing other women go through the program and thinking ‘that could be me’,” she said. “It is great to see the interest grow in supporting female coaches, and I believe will only continue to strengthen over time.”
