Golf Teams Start Nationals Tuesday
The St. Clair College women's and men's golf teams are in King Township, Ontario this week to take part in the 2024 CCAA Golf National Championships being hosted by Humber College. The practice round took part on Monday with the first of four scheduled rounds starting on Tuesday at Red Crest Golf Club.
This will be the second time in a row that the St. Clair men's team have qualified for Nationals since 2008. The men are coming off winning an OCAA Gold medal; their first in the history of the OCAA. There are 11 teams competing from across Canada. Five men play for each team with the top four scores counting each day. The Saints men finished in 4th place at last year's Nationals. Competing for the St. Clair men's team are Spencer Higginbottom (Lakeshore; Tecumseh Vista), Steven Hill (Lakeshore; St. Anne's), Simon Moir (London; St. Thomas Aquinas), Cale Marontate (Harrow; Kingsville) and Owen Laverty (Whitby; Brooklin). There is also an individual competition for all the men.
Alyssa Cowling (Oldcastle; Villanova) and Justine Gorham (Amherstburg; L'Essor) will be taking part in the women's event which is an individual and conference competition. Cowling and Gorham are on OCAA Team 2. Three players play for the conference team with the top two counting.
The Saints golf team is ranked 3rd in Canada heading into the Championships.
