Women’s Basketball Suffer Early Season Loss

Sarnia, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball fell short in a tough test Wednesday night in Sarnia dropping a 65-59 decision to Lambton College who are the defending OCAA Champions.  The Saints are now 1-1 early in their West Division regular season schedule. 

Lambton was able to move ahead 18-15 after the opening quarter but the Saints overtook the home team for a 34-30 halftime lead.  St. Clair was undone by a poor third quarter only scoring six points in the frame and trailed 49-40 heading to the fourth.  The Saints dug a 16-point hole with under seven minutes to play and mounted a comeback that saw them come within four points in the final minute but would come no closer. 

St. Clair shot 30% in the contest and made just eight of their 3-point attempts (24%) while only getting eight attempts from the charity stripe.  Lambton had a decided advantage in rebounding most of the game outscoring the Saints 13-5 in second-chance points.  The deficit on the glass shrunk to 53-46 by the final buzzer thanks in part to St. Clair forcing Lambton into some quick shots with pressure defense.   

Shae-Lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) managed a double-double for the Saints scoring 16 points while adding 11 rebounds and 6 assists.  Kaelyn Batten (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) also had 16 points to go with 8 rebounds but was the only other St. Clair player to reach double figures. 

The Saints will be on the road next to face Redeemer University (Ancaster) on Nov. 8^th and finish the road trip at Conestoga College (Kitchener) on Nov. 9^th.  St. Clair will be home next on Nov. 16^th against Fanshawe College (London).
