Women’s Basketball Lose Defensive Battle

Windsor, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball team were on the short end of a defensive battle losing 47-39 to Niagara College (Welland) Saturday afternoon at the SportsPlex.  With two games remaining before their semester break the Saints drop to a 3-4 record which is currently 6th Place in the OCAA's West Division.

St. Clair was slow out of the gate allowing Niagara to get a 9-0 head start Saturday which turned into a 17-6 deficit after the first quarter.  Niagara scored the first five points of the second taking their biggest lead of the game at 22-6 and the Saints could only manage to get within 28-16 by halftime.  St. Clair used an 11-3 run to begin the third quarter and were within four points (31-27) but Niagara closed with a 6-0 run to maintain a 10-point cushion heading to the final frame.  Even though the Saints won the third and fourth quarters they could come no closer than five points the rest of the way in the low scoring affair.

St. Clair was held to under 22% shooting from the floor and while they forced 24 Niagara turnovers could not turn it into enough points in response.  Niagara outscored the Saints 34-10 in the paint and 19-6 in points off the bench.

Kaelyn Batten (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) was the game's high scorer with just 11 points and rounded out her stat line with 5 assists to go with 3 steals for St. Clair.  Quinn MacIsaac (Windsor, ON/FJ Brennan) made three triples for the Saints and was the only other player to reach double figures with 10 points adding 3 rebounds.  Shae-Lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) nearly recorded a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds for St. Clair.

The Saints go on the road next weekend to face 1st Place Humber College (Etobicoke) on Saturday and finish their semester at Sheridan College (Brampton) on Sunday.
