Women’s Basketball Offense Sputters in Hamilton
Hamilton, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball team had a good start Friday night in Hamilton at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre, but the offense faltered down the stretch in a 66-42 loss to Mohawk College. The Saints are now 5-9 in the OCAA's West Division which currently stands in 6th Place.
St. Clair made three triples and forced seven Mohawk turnovers in the opening frame to build a 10-point lead at 19-9 entering the second quarter. Unfortunately, that early flourish exhausted nearly half of their remaining field goals in the contest and Mohawk flipped the game around holding the Saints to just five points the remainder of the half for a 29-24 intermission advantage. St. Clair was unable to make any inroads the remainder of the game as Mohawk widened the gap to as much as a 26-point deficit in the fourth.
The Saints shot just over 24% from the field for the game with only 7 long balls and allowed Mohawk to convert 41% including 38% (10-for-36) from the beyond the arc. St. Clair did outscore the home team 20-12 in points off the bench which was a lone bright spot.
Shae-lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) led the Saints with 14 points and added 4 rebounds with 4 steals. Ava Proskos (Pickering, ON) chipped in with 11 points and 3 rebounds off the bench for St. Clair.
St. Clair finishes the weekend road trip with a game at Niagara College (Welland) on Saturday at 2:00pm. Their final regular season game will be on Feb. 8th when they host Redeemer University (Ancaster).
