Women's Soccer Split Opening Weekend Matches

The St. Clair College women's soccer team had a solid weekend as they hosted two matches at Acumen Stadium in front of some great crowds to begin their OCAA regular season.

On Saturday afternoon, the Saints took on the Redeemer University Royals (Ancaster) and suffered a tough 3-2 loss.

The Saints went down 2-0 in the first half with the Royals scoring in the 19th and 30th minutes of play. St. Clair responded in the 52nd minute on a tally by Alessia Olivito (Windsor; Holy Names) assisted by Victoria Walsh (Georgetown; Christ the King). The Saints tied things up in the 80th minute on a great finish by Alexa Mognon (LaSalle; Assumption) after a nice pass by Natalie Kersey (Belle River; St. Anne's). Unfortunately for St. Clair Redeemer scored on a nice strike in the 90th minute after a turnover to earn the win. Lily Estephan (Windsor; Brennan) took the loss in goal making 6 saves while the Redeemer keeper was forced to make 8 saves.

On Sunday afternoon, the Saints hosted the Mohawk Mountaineers (Hamilton) and rebounded with a solid 4-1 win.

Mohawk went up 1-0 in the 19th minute but that was it for the visitors as St. Clair responded with four straight goals. Layla Hutson (Windsor; Holy Names) scored on a corner assisted by Olivito in the 43rd minute just before the half to tie the match. Mognon, Walsh and Talia Liburdi (Tecumseh; St. Anne's) all scored in the second half with Brianna Kinsley- Clough (Georgetown; Christ the King) and Walsh earning assists.  The Saints had 21 shot attempts compared to 15 for Mohawk. Estephan was solid in goal earning the win and making 5 saves.

Mohawk's record dropped to 1-1 on the season with the loss.

The St. Clair women are currently ranked 9th in the OCAA in first rankings of the season.
